Sub-Arctic Bushcraft Expedition

Join us on this inspirational 10-day snowshoe expedition, where you will traverse frozen waterways through the uninhabited interior of Ontario’s sub-Arctic taiga forest. Travelling on foot and using traditional clothing and equipment, we pull all our gear and supplies on hand-built toboggans; packing a trail through the winter wilderness .

Accommodation is in two group sized, wood-heated, canvas tents. The days will be spent trekking through breathtaking scenery, and the nights enjoying hearty food and good company.

The next expedition will be with our Canadian partners, ‘Lure of the North’
We will outfit you with traditional snow-shoes and hand made mukluks – used by the natives of Labrador, these clothing choices are perfectly designed to meet the needs of winter travel.

The expedition will introduce you to classic winter bushcraft so that you can begin to understand the intricacies required to live in this amazing environment.

You will have time to re-pack gear, learn some of the basic skills required for the journey from a private woodland and try out your outfit, before hitting the trail for the following 7-day expedition. During the trail phase, we will focus on winter travel and trail-skills by totally immersing ourselves in this amazing environment and ‘hit the trail’ for the next 7-days.
You will learn:

  • Living in canvas wall tent
  • Using wood stoves
  • Emergency fire lighting
  • Emersion drills ‘going through the ice’ (optional)
  • Ice reading skills
  • Using Bearpaw & Beavertail snowshoes
  • Loading and pulling traditional toboggans
  • Backwoods cooking
  • Axemanship & sawcraft
  • Aputiak (igloo – conditions permitting)
  • Athapaskan quinzee
  • Using an Ice Chisel
  • Star navigation & mythology
  • Tracking and trailing
We are thrilled to be working with  Lure of the North.
What is it about? The aim of the course is for you to acquire the skills in planning, preparation, bushcraft, traditional skills, snow-craft and knowledge to travel safely in the sub-zero conditions of the boreal north. You will be spending everyday exploring, walking, sawing wood, chopping, lighting stoves, cooking, tracking and living in the frozen forest.
