Steve Hanton winter camping in Maine USAJoining us in early 2007, Steven has been a full-time member of the instructional team for 5 years.  He  completed a BSc in Outdoor Education with Geography at Edinburgh University, combining this formal study with intensive personal dedication to learning bushcraft and wilderness living skills.  Completing his  apprenticeship under Ben and Lisa in 2008, he was presented with his Instructor's Knife as a testament to his abilities. As an exponent of wilderness, with a passion for indigenous knowledge, Steven has expeditioned in  remote areas of Alaska, Norway, Namibia, New England, Canada, Indonesia and Borneo, where he enjoys the chance to use his skills and knowledge within context.

Steven is accomplished and well-rounded in wilderness living skills, survival and bushcraft and draws upon his experience to enthuse others through his teaching.  He is an ardent naturalist, knowledgeable botany enthusiast and talented tracker and his skills and experience have led him to employment tracking elusive wolves in Colorado's Rocky Mountains and Canada Lynx in the frozen boreal forests of Northern Maine.

In 2008, Steven's repeated visits to New England, to pursue intensive animal tracking study, culminated in a two-day formal assessment on his ability to interpret track and sign.  The 'Tracking Evaluation' process (which was originally developed in Southern Africa by Louis Liebenberg to award credit to Bushmen trackers), is growing and gaining international recognition as an excellent method of evaluating both track and sign interpretation and trailing skills.  Steven was privileged to be able to spend time with some of the most gifted and dedicated naturalists  in preparation for the evaluation in central Massachusetts, where his ability was reflected in a 94% Level III certificate, assessed and presented to him by Mark Elbroch (internationally renowned tracker and author).

Steven is a keen canoeist and mountaineer and  while not teaching enjoys exploring the rugged mountainscapes and coastline of Scotland in his hand built cedar-strip canoe.
In addition he has a certificate in Bird Biology through Cornell University, is a Level One UKCC canoe coach, a qualified Summer Mountain Leader, and holds Wilderness Medical Training's 'Advanced Medicine for Remote Foreign Travel' certificate.

Steven also maintains a blog discussing bushcraft related topics.....
