What is Bushcraft?

Bushcraft Gallery

Bushman elder with a childBushcraft is the world’s oldest outdoor pursuit, born out of necessity and desire to meet the natural world on, its own terms, it defines the acquisition of skills and knowledge required to live and travel in wild country. Bushcraft exemplifies the spirit of pioneering; living in, and traversing wild places. With its romantic aspirations and harsh realities, bushcraft informs and equips the individual for expedition and adventure travel; instilling a powerful sense of identity and self-reliance.

Wilderness living skills have been developed and refined, not only by native peoples in foreign climes, but also much closer to home: by woodsmen, hunters, trappers, naturalists, research teams, contemporary explorers, and the pioneers who opened up the frontiers of the New World. It is the skill and knowledge of those who have lived, worked and travelled through wild country that can provide valuable insight for today's outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, backpackers and global adventurers.
