Coastal Forager
Beachcombing, Bushcraft & Foraging Skills on the Scottish West Coast

Location Gallery

Britain has over 11,000 miles of coastline, comprising a collection of habitats from rocky cliffs and exposed peninsulas, to vast sand flats and inland lagoons.  This incredible diversity of environments in turn attracts a wealth of marine and terrestrial life, drawn to coast to take advantage of the possibilities for life.  Our ancestors took full advantage of this abundance of resources, spending large parts of the year camped out at coastal sites, foraging, harvesting, preparing and preserving this inter-tidal bounty.  As modern hunter-gatherers, we too can take advantage of our coastline, which still provides the observant and patient forager with an incredibly rich potential for food gathering.

This six-day course is a  unique chance to explore the extraordinary diversity and utility of Britain's richest environment.  We will gather, forage and fish for for the abundant plants, seaweeds and shellfish that are readily available at our stunning and remote Scottish Sea-loch location

Setting up camp at a sheltered bay in a remote sea loch on Scotland's stunning west coast, we will spend a week fully immersed in coastal life, surrounded by mountains and ancient birch woodland and accompanied by incredible wildlife such as Sea Eagles, Otters, Seals and Red Deer.  Our activities will be dictated by the rhythms of the season and the tides as we take full advantage of the abundant foraging potential.

A mix of ancient and modern wisdom, this course will cover everything from simple gathering techniques to advanced fishing methods, utilising knowledge gained by our ancestors and coupled with the advantages of modern equipment. We will cover;
  • Understanding the coast; tides and tidal zones
  • Seaweeds; Identification, collection, food and utility
  • Coastal plants and trees; identification, collection, food, medicine and utility
  • Edible fungi foray
  • Gathering shellfish; raking, netting, digging pots and traps
  • Traditional cookery techniques
  • Fishing techniques; traditional long-lines,  fish spears, baits, feathers and lures
  • Cooking fish and shellfish
  • Coastal wildlife; tracking and spotting
