Moccasins, Mukluks & Mittens

Mukluks
Acquiring outdoor living skills does not stop at being able to find food, make fire or build a shelter. Your freedom and comfort in Nature also encompasses that you can keep yourself warm by correctly clothing yourself. Keeping your extremities warm and dry is of the utmost priority. This workshop is aimed at those who simply want to learn how to make traditional footwear and mittens, or take pride in preparing their own winter expedition gear.

From our Northwoods Winter Expeditions in Maine we have learned from experience that clothing made of natural, breathable materials far exceeds the performance man-made materials can deliver in comfort, durability and warmth. During this workshop you will not only make a pair of buckskin moccasin/mukluk boots, but you will also learn how to make felt from wool and create a fitted, seamless pair of inner felt boots made of Hebridean and Merino sheep’s wool. Not neglecting our hands, we will also make chopper style over-mittens and sew removable, separate inner wool liners fit to wear in temperatures of -28C or more! Your pair of moccasins and mittens will be finished off with decorative trimmings of ribbon and fur to make them uniquely yours.

During this workshop we will cover;

*Buckskin & canvas moccasin/mukluks
*Felt boots
*Windproof outer mittens
*Woollen inner mitten liners
*Working with fur and buckskin
*Making felt
*Puckering stitch
*Suitable natural materials, tools and needles
*Sewing techniques
*Decorative finishes with ribbon and fur.

Basic hand sewing skills are a pre-requisite for this course (If Ben can manage it…any one can!) All materials are provided, but you may bring your own fur coats/stoles and trimmings, or use your own brain tanned buckskin from the Tanning Course.
